Museum Folkwang
The Museum Folkwang owes its reputation to its excellent collection of 19th century and classical modern paintings and sculpture, post-1945 art and photography. The core of this major collection is 19th and 20th century German and French painting. Forerunners of modernism are represented with masterpieces by Cézanne, Gauguin and van Gogh. Also present are German Romantics (C.D. Friedrich, Canus) as well as Courbet, Daumier, Manet and Renoir. The numerous works by German Expressionists and the Blaue Reiter are of unique quality. From the 50’s and 60’s, special mention is due large format American color field painting (Newman, Rothko, Reinhard, Stella) and German Informal Art (Nay, Schumacher, Thieler).

The Villa Hügel
Single-family house“ and industrial monument.
The property Hügel 1 in the Essen borough of Bredeney is listed in the estate register of the city of Essen as a single-family house. However, with its 269 rooms and 8,100 sq.m usable floor space, beautifully situated within 28 ha of park overlooking Lake Baldeney, the Villa is far more than merely the residence of an industrial magnate – it is a symbol of German industrialization.
The Villa Hügel, erected betwenn 1870 and 1873 by Alfred Krupp (1812–1887), was intended as a residence and refuge for Krupp and his family, far away from the noise and heat of teh cast steel factory Fried. Krupp. After the death of his father Friedrich Krupp (1778–1826) Alfred Krupp took over responsibility for the firm at the early age of 14. In the following decades he turned the company into one of the most important industrial firms in the 19th century. The Villa Hügel was to provide a suitable stately frame for representation, receptions and festivities. Emperors and kings, business men from all over the world, politicians and heads of state of many nations visited the Villa Hügel.
Today the Villa and the entire estate is owned by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung.

Schalke 04
The main crowd-puller on the club complex is of course the VELTINS-Arena when Schalke are playing at home or when a concert is taking place. Yet the club complex is always worth a visit, even when there is nothing happening in the Arena.
On the 300,000 square metre area known as the "Schalker Feld" between the VELTINS-Arena an the Park Stadium there is plenty to see an do. One attraction is the club museum, which contains hundreds of exhibits that illustrate the history of the Royal Blues. The museum is also the starting point for the popular tours of the VELTINS-Arena.
The Schalke training sessions, which are normally open to the public, are yet another attraction. And no visit to the club complex would be complete without a glass of pils or a cup of coffee in the 'Schalker' pub and a browse round the S04 shop.
